Shawn Cornett - Chairperson
As a leadership and business management consultant, Shawn brings her extensive experience working with boards, executives, and operations in the for profit and not-profit worlds to support BGCC. Leveraging a highly diverse career, her focus is on assisting organizations to effectively and strategically manage their business by providing leadership in a changing world, whether through mergers, acquisitions, technology shifts or organic growth, to achieve sustainable business success. With more than 25 years in the energy sector, most recently as VP HR and Talent Management, Nexen, Shawn has also always provided time to volunteer in not-for-profit organizations contributing the same skills, experience and passion to the social sector as she does in her consulting practice.
She believes that we all have a responsibility to do what we can to help others and to make our community, i.e. the city of Calgary, a great place for everyone. Shawn has served on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary since 2007 and is also a board member for CAWST (Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology), an executive for the Women’s Leadership Initiative of the United Way and sits on the Leaders’ Cabinet. Shawn holds various technical and academic degrees, including a BSc Geography, MSc Environmental Studies, MA Human Development and PhD Human and Organization Development, board governance, executive coaching, leadership development, change management and employee engagement.
Melanie Gaston Deliman
Melanie joined the BGCC Board of Directors in November 2006. Melanie is a Partner at Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt LLP and focuses on commercial litigation, including contractual disputes, insurance matters, securities litigation, commercial landlord disputes and regulatory law. In 2006, Melanie was recognized as one of Calgary’s Top 40 Under 40!
Thiloma Hofer - Treasurer and Vice Chairperson
Thiloma joined the BGCC Board of Directors in May 2010 and is the Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee. She is a Chartered Accountant and earned her designation at KPMG LLP. She left public practice in 2007 to start a family. In addition to her volunteer work at BGCC, Thiloma serves the Board Chair at Social Venture Partners Calgary.
Nancy L. Brennan - Board Secretary
Nancy joined the BGCC Board of Directors in 2010 and serves as Board Secretary, and HR Committee member. She is currently employed as Vice-President, Corporate & Compliance with Encana Corporation, where she is responsible for corporate legal services and the Company’s ethics and compliance portfolio. Nancy is also mother to two active school age children.
Superintendent Guy Slater
Guy is a superintendent with the Calgary Police Service, which has been actively involved with Boys and Girls Clubs since its inception. Guy has continued the tradition and has been an active member of the BGCC Board of Directors since 2001. He brings community experiences gained through 25 years of policing and his positive belief in children and youth make him an incredible advocate for the work of BGCC. When Guy is not working or volunteering he enjoys the outdoors, biking, rugby and spending time with his family.
Aidan joined the BGCC Board in January 2013. Originally from Belfast in Northern Ireland, Aidan moved with his family to Canada in early 2007. Aidan has worked in Europe, the US and Canada at both BP and Husky Energy. Aidan is married and the proud father of 2 very energetic boys and is delighted to be working with such a rewarding organization as BGCC.
Karleen recently joined the BGCC Board of Directors in February 2013 and is also a member of the Finance Committee. Karleen is a Chartered Business Valuator and Chartered Accountant with Ernst & Young LLP, as a partner in their Transactions practise. She provides a variety of business valuation services related to financial reporting, mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures, ownership restructuring, and income tax reorganizations across many industries. Karleen is also the proud mother of two young children.
Jason is Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs at SEVEN24 Films, a Calgary- based film and television production company, and has been a member of Calgary’s film and television community for over 23 years. He oversees production financing, contractual compliance, insurance matters, tax credits and Canadian content certification for numerous television series and movie productions. Jason is also the Canadian Media Production Association’s Industrial Relations committee Co-Chair where he participates in the negotiation of collective labour agreements governing film and television production across Canada. Jason is a supporter of the arts in Calgary and is a subscriber and volunteer at Alberta Theatre Projects.
Anil joined the BGCC Board in September 2016. Anil is a Director in TD Securities corporate banking group, providing financing and advice to a portfolio of predominantly energy-focused clients. He is also a Professional Engineer, registered in Alberta. He is very excited to join the BGCC Board and to help in any way with the important work and services the organization provides. Anil is married and is the proud father of two young children.

Robert Hagerman - Chairman
Bob, both a chartered accountant and lawyer, is a Partner with the national firm of Gowling Lafleur Henderson L.L.P. His practice focuses on tax, corporate and estate planning for owner manager and family businesses. His involvement with the Boys and Girls Clubs began in 1981 after the passing of his first wife who worked for the agency while attending university. Bob is also active with other boards including the Foundation and Community Opportunity Foundation of Alberta. Married with four children, Bob enjoys participating with his family in most sports, including kickboxing, skiing, golf and juggling.
John M. Bowlen
John is a long-time resident of Calgary, having lived in this city for the past 25 years. During this time, he has been employed in the oil and gas industry and is currently President of Regent Resources Ltd. In addition to being a past board member and President of the Boys and Girls Clubs, he has served on the board of the Calgary Between Friends Club. John comes by his affinity for children naturally: he has five of his own.
Sandy has been a very committed volunteer and advocate for the children and youth in Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary since joining the board in 1983. She was a board member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary for over 10 years, holding the position of board Chair for two of those years. and a Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary Foundation member since it began. Sandy is a dedicated fundraiser for the children and youth of BGCC, and is passionate about helping youth at Ave 15. Sandy brings her skills and enthusiasm to the volunteer work she does, but just as importantly, she brings her family and friends, and encourages everyone to help. Many past and present leadership volunteers in BGCC consider Sandy their mentor.
Since 1986, Rob has been actively involved with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Alberta, Calgary and Edmonton. He joined the Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary in 1989, where he has worn many hats, including President and Treasurer of the Board of Directors. He is currently a member of the Foundation Board. Rob is the Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Ironhorse Oil & Gas Inc. In his spare time Rob enjoys skiing, golf and the company of family and friends.
Kathy is a former Boys and Girls Clubs Club Director and has been involved with the Heroes and Legends Capital Campaign as well as past annual fundraisers. She is also involved with the Aboriginal Pride Program through the United Way of Calgary and various other volunteer positions. Kathy is married with 3 children and enjoys traveling, fitness and yoga.
Gary has called Calgary home for the last 42 years, having attended both Mount Royal College and the University of Calgary. Gary was a landman in the Calgary’s oil and gas industry for the past 25 years, and has been a member of the Canadian Association of Landmen for over 20 years. Gary is married to a wonderful woman who was a teacher in the Calgary Public School system and who shares his passion for children and education. Gary is particularly passionate about child hunger, and chose to join his foundation, Fuel for School, with the BGCC Foundation, to maximize the impact his work makes to reduce child hunger in Calgary’s schools. He hopes that through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary he will have the opportunity to give back to a community that has given so much to him and his family.
Dennis joined the Foundation Board in 2011. He has been involved with Boys and Girls Clubs since 2002, having served concurrently and in various roles on the Boards of Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary and Alberta. Dennis is both a lawyer and a Professional Engineer. In addition to his involvement with BGCC, Dennis has actively volunteered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). In 2011 he was recognized for his noteworthy service to the engineering profession by being designated a Fellow of Engineers Canada. Dennis has a young family and enjoys spending as much time as possible with his two kids.
John Gulak is a busy community volunteer. He served on the board of directors of Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary from 1989 to 1998, and was president from 1993 to 1995. He also volunteers for Outward Bound Canada, the Alberta Lawyers Assistance Society, and the Calgary Drug Treatment Court. John has a law degree from the University of Western Ontario and is Vice President, Legal & Fun with Prairie Merchant Corporation, a Calgary private equity firm. John enjoys photography, cycling, snowshoeing, hiking, and whistling.
