Hangar Drop-In

The focus of the Hangar Drop-In program is two-fold:

  • To provide children/youth with opportunities that help them develop a love for the arts, in various forms, while enabling them to direct their own activities in a way that inspires them.

  • To provide children/youth with activities that allow them to learn basic movement and sport skills that enhance their physical literacy and assist them in meeting the recommendations of Canada's Physical Activity Guide of at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

The Hangar History

Constructed in 1929 for the Rutledge Air Service the Rutledge Hangar is the original and largest hangar at the Stanley Jones airport, Calgary’s first publicly operated airport. It is the only original structure that remains at this site. The historical interest of the Rutledge Hangar lies in its association with the development of commercial aviation in Calgary during the late 1920s and its more limited services as an air hangar during the 1930s. After the present airport opened in 1939 the Calgary Aero Club continued to use this field where it trained pilots of the RCAF at the beginning of World War II.

In 1975 Boys Club was officially incorporated as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary.  The Rutledge Hangar, re-named the Renfrew Community Club, became the central location of all Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary activities.

After renovations in 2008, the Hangar now offers a full size gym, production stage, art room, music room and a multi-purpose room allowing a variety of program opportunities for children and youth.
