FAQ
“You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.”
– Winston Churchill

1. How long before I can start volunteering in a program?
From the time you inquire about a volunteer opportunity, it can take about four weeks before you are volunteering. New volunteers are screened via background and reference checks, and also attend an orientation and interview to get acquainted with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary (BGCC).
2. How much time do I have to give?
We offer a range of volunteer opportunities and commitment levels in order to accommodate our volunteers. We provide three types of involvement including: occasional (special events, fundraisers, casinos), seasonal (3- 6 month blocks) and regular (ongoing weekly scheduled shift).
3. What kinds of volunteer opportunities are available?
There are many different volunteer opportunities at the BGCC depending on our current needs, your interests and availability. Detailed information on our programs, types of positions, qualifications, and more can be found under our current volunteer opportunities
4. What types of documentation do I need to volunteer?
This will depend on the type of volunteer position you are interested in. Some special event and administration positions require less documentation than a community club or camp program. Positions requiring cleared Criminal Record and Child Welfare checks need two pieces of government issued identification (see next question for details). We will help you apply for these checks and we cover all costs so they are FREE for our volunteers.
5. What counts as two pieces of accepted identification?
Government issued identification such as Alberta Motor Registries ID (driver's and learner's licenses and identification card), birth certificate, Alberta Health Care card, passport, immigration ID card, citizenship card, Indian Status card, firearm card, permanent residence card, National Defense card and Social Insurance card. Please note, one of the two pieces of accepted identification must be photo ID. The following are NOT acceptable ID: student ID, credit cards, City of Calgary recreation card and Blue Cross card.
