Be a Homework Hero and help take the ‘work' out of homework!

This is an exciting new program and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary is committed to reducing barriers to academic success and engagement.

At the present time we have fulfilled our homework hero volunteer needs and will repost this opportunity in our opportunities section next summer.

Homework Heroes are needed:

• At our Community Club locations, afterschool (3-6pm) Monday through Friday. The focus of the community club homework help will be math for grades 3-7. Community Clubs are located in the communities of Bowness, Falconridge, Pineridge, Forest Lawn, Penbrooke, and Thorncliffe.

• To assist our at-risk youth who are currently residing in group and assisted living homes. These youth may be coping with delayed school engagement, behaviour issues, homelessness and unsafe living conditions at home. The focus for our at-risk youth will be help, Monday through Friday (5-8pm), with their general studies - math, social studies, language arts, etc. for grades 6-12.

The approach to taking the ‘work' out of homework is based on:

• Promoting a positive learning environment to build confidence through praise and encouragement;

• Focusing on both conceptual and procedural learning;

• Breaking down concepts and skills into small sequential steps to achieve understanding; and,

• Raising the bar incrementally to keep all youth engaged and attentive.
