With the recent snowfall, we are reminded that the holiday season is just around the corner, but for many families who use the Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary (BGCC) services, this season can be very stressful. Now more than ever, our families are struggling with obstacles such as prolonged unemployment, housing insecurity and food scarcity.
We know that in times of economic hardship we see Calgary’s most vulnerable kids, youth and families struggle to make it, and as a result, we continue to see a growing demand for our programs and services in every quadrant of the city.
For example, in our Food and Nutrition in Schools (FANS) program alone, we saw a 30% increase in requests from Calgary schools to provide healthy breakfast and snacks to children coming to school hungry. And despite seeing an increased demand for services, at a time when we needed them most, corporate donations declined more than 40% from the same time last year.
With the help of holiday hero program, vulnerable children and youth in our city don’t have to go hungry, get cold, or live in harm’s way. Holiday Heroes make a critical difference in our kids’ lives by allowing BGCC to continue to provide much-needed services to the community.
You don’t need special strength or powers to be a Holiday Hero; it’s easy! Being a hero means hosting a fundraising event, provide stocking stuffer donations, throw a holiday party for our kids or make a financial contribution.
We know that Calgary is strong, but together we can be stronger. We would appreciate your help spreading the word about the Holiday Hero program.
