Food insecurity continues to be a significant problem in Canada where 1 in 6 children go hungry.
Food insecurity exists when families cannot afford to buy the proper variety and quantity of nutritious food. Not having enough fruits, vegetables and sources of protein have detrimental effects on children’s healthy development and growth. The usage of food banks by low-income families in Canada continues to grow. In Alberta, 60,000 individuals rely on food banks each month and 43% of those are children. Many parents must make the difficult choice between paying rent and bills or buying food.
