Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Queer, Questioning and Two-Spirit (LGBTQ2S+)
In recent years, there has been extensive research in the area of youth homelessness both in Canada and internationally. We have seen a great deal of initiatives towards the movement to end youth homelessness. However, there is a lack of knowledge around lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, questioning, and two-spirit (LGBTQ2S+) youth homeless in Canada.

What we do know is that LGBTQ2S+ youth are overrepresented in the population of youth experiencing homelessness. It has been estimated that approximately 25-40% of youth experiencing homelessness identify as LGBTQ2S+.
Our Aura program provides youth with a safe place where their sexual orientation and gender identity is respected and celebrated. Young people will have the opportunity to live in a supportive and affirming environment where they can strengthen their relationships with natural supports, connect to community and end their experience of homelessness.
At Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary, we include the ‘+’ to be inclusive of all sexual and gender minorities.
Our Impact
- Our Housing First program for LGBTQ2S+, Aura, helped 19 youth to find secure housing.
- In 2016, 100% of youth agreed that their gender and/or sexual identity is celebrated in Aura.
