What's going on at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary...
Thank you to the Calgary Home Builders Foundation (CHBF) for their support of $60,000 to Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary's Avenue 15 Homeless Youth Shelter!
This generous donation will fund a revitalization project at Avenue 15 that will decrease the opportunities for vandalism at our Shelter and associated maintenance costs, as well as create a landscape that is attractive to the community.
In the new proposed plans, CHBF will build a safe, accessible entrance for all with the creation of a ramp, replacing the steps at the front entrance. The fence will be replaced with beautiful hedges, creating a ‘living fence' which will carry on to the rest of the yard with beautiful shrubs and perennials. Some structural issues will also be dealt with through this much needed project.
Avenue 15 Homeless Youth Shelter offers street youth, ages 12 - 17, a safe place to be. Last year over 80% of youth in Avenue 15 were successful in ending their episode of homelessness. We look forward to welcoming the Calgary Home Builders Foundation volunteers to our home. Thank you for your support.
Project Angel
The Glencoe Club transforms Christmas for Youth at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary
During the holiday season the biggest dilema for most of us is trying to find the right gift for that certain person in our lives who has everything. For some Calgary youth, finding a place to sleep or food to eat is what they are wishing for the most.
We are thankful to Project Angel and the members and staff at The Glencoe Club who wanted to change that.
2011 marks the second year that Project Angel, a wonderful, well-organized "tradition" at The Glencoe Club, raised funds, gifts and hearts as they gathered essential items for our youth at Avenue 15 and Safe House.
The Glencoe Club created some unique and fun ways to raise money; such as their 'climb for a cause' where pledges were collected to have staff use a step-machine for 30 minutes at a time (for a total of 14.5 hours!); the Pro Shop happily wrapped gifts for donation; poinsettias were sold with $10 from every sale going towards the shelters; and youth were given gifts designed specifically for them with "Loft, Link and Launch" packages. All youth were adopted within eight days of the start of Project Angel!
When delivery day came, it was hard to believe we weren't in Santa's Workshop with all the fabulous volunteer 'elves' and the wall-to-wall backpacks, boxes and bags. The message sent that day was warm and caring and you could just imagine all the faces lit up with joy at helping to unload the multitude of gifts. We can't thank The Glencoe Club staff and members enough for what they have done. Many children and teens will know warmth from the blankets and sleeping bags, filled tummy's from the kitchen supplies and food, and a sense of joy and comfort from the whistle's and stuffed animals.
To the members and staff of The Glencoe Club, know that you have made a difference in the lives of Calgarian's this holiday season and into 2012.
